How Cardiovascular Patients Can Use Smartwatches to Leverage Digital Health.

Smartwatches provide opportunities for Cardiovascular patients to leverage digital health through remote monitoring. Smartwatches like the Apple Watch can enable at-home assessment of functional capacity in patients with cardiovascular disease by using a Six-minute walking test feature. This feature is a golden standard to evaluate the functional mobility of a patient. It is a measure of your capacity to exercise.

Patients with cardiovascular diseases need to make trips to clinics or make doctor visits to measure their functional capacity. Salford Researchers did a study with support from Apple. This study could change the entirety of these visits by using a smartwatch instead. Instead of making routine visits, patients can now do the tests from their homes.

From the findings, frailty and functional capacity could be monitored and evaluated remotely in patients with cardiovascular disease using smartwatches. With remote management, patients can receive care from the comfort of their homes, saving time and reducing transportation hurdles. The study concluded that the data collected by the smartwatches can be a good predictor of functional capacity.

Smartwatches can do more and Apple is always working to expand the capabilities in terms of Digital Health.
