How Artificial Intelligence Can Help in Radiology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming part of our healthcare systems following the adoption of technology by the medical community.  AI has evolved past the myths that it was going to replace medical practitioners and it now working alongside them to simplify work. This article will discuss the various ways in which Artificial Intelligence can help in Medical Diagnosis for Radiology.

A lot of pressure has been exerted on medical practitioners due to the demand caused by COVID-19 patients in many facilities and this has subsequently caused a burn out. Radiologists receive a tone of images that they have to go through daily and they are required to make quick decisions. Artificial intelligence can come in to help reduce the workload pressure in medical diagnosis in the following ways.

Disease detection

AI can help to automatically detect diseases at an early stage.  From here, they can be treated without a lot of input. An algorithm fed with images of a cancer suspect is able to determine whether the patient is sick or not. It can also help in identifying more than one condition from an image to prevent a case of misdiagnosis.

Medical decision making and Management.

AI will help the medical practitioner in identifying critical cases first and working on them to save their lives. Reviewing a lot of reports will cause burn out for the practitioner however applying AI will help in categorizing the results according to criticality. Once they are categorized, decision making will be made easily.

In Radiology, Artificial Intelligence can streamline workflow, help in decision making, management and also in monitoring of chronic conditions. Imaging systems like one developed by AIDOC  can take on huge amounts of digital images and process them. It then categorises them according to urgency and informs the radiologist on which ones to prioritise.
