The Ministry of Health Uganda has released a statement announcing that Uganda will access COVID-19 Vaccine from AstraZeneca. This was after a meeting by the National Task Force on COVID-19 chaired by His Excellency, The President met at the State House on Saturday.
Due to the surge of COVID-19 cases within the last three months, it was deemed urgent to access the vaccine. The vaccine will not only serve as a mitigating strategy against the disease but also enable a safe return to normalcy. This is good news for Ugandans as previous reports show that most African countries would receive the vaccine in 2022.
AstraZeneca plc is a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Cambridge, England. India and UK are among other countries that have authorized AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine for use.
Accessing the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in Uganda will be in an equitable manner starting with the most vulnerable. After the most vulnerable, then those at risk will be next. The statement also points out that Uganda will also explore other traditional vaccine options. This will be after they receive approval from the WHO.
